Cooking is my passion and when I write recipes in Aapkispace, I thoroughly enjoy it. As I was not keeping well for a few days, I had to take the much-needed break but I really missed clicking pictures and posting them here.

Being born and brought up in Andhra,  Gongura is one of my favorite green leaves. Most of us are aware of Gongura pickle that is served in the Andhra restaurants and that comes from Andhra homes. Today,  my come back recipe is Gongura rice, a perfect one to satisfy our palates and a perfect lunch box recipe and did I mention that it’s easy peasy lemon squeezy as well.

Ingredients of Gongura Rice

Cooked and cooled rice: 1.5 cups

Mustard:  1 tsp

Jeera/Cumin: 1 tsp

Urad dhal: 1 tsp

Chana dhal: 1 tsp

Green chillies: 5

Curry leaves a few

Peanuts few

Cashew nuts few

Gongura leaves: 1 bunch (washed)

Turmeric: few pinches.

Oil: 2 table spoons.


Take oil in a hot kadai/pan.

Add mustard. When it splutters, add jeera, urad dhal, chana dhal, curry leaves, slit green chillies, peanuts and cashew nuts.

Fry all these for a minute.

Add gongura leaves and fry well.

Once the gongura leaves are well cooked, add salt and turmeric, mix well.

Add this well cooked mixture to the cooked and cooled down rice and mix well.

Yummylicious, finger licking gongura rice will be ready.

Note: Taste the rice and if required add lemon juice if the gongura leaves are not sour enough.
