Coloring Books for Adults and how it heals!

Adult coloring books are in. Its official, they have made a comeback, and in such a way! It is the hottest trend out there, folks! Its an escape to the wonderland, to the magical world where you can use your own colors, your own mode of colors to paint your own beautiful frame. And you do not even need to be an artist.

I chanced upon these when I was browsing randomly through the shelves in the stationary aisle of Fred Meyer ( Local Grocery Store). ( I am a big collector and stationary lover, and everything new and colorful catches my fancy). I had heard about these books from my friends and cousins in India. Its a great stress reliever, said my friend, who also happens to keep one at her office desk and uses all the free coffee time coloring and of course on her long commute to her workplace. Even Warner Bros have a Harry Potter Coloring book and what a coincidence, I bought this on the 31st July, also Harry’s birthday. I am extremely unabashed as declaring myself a Harry Potter fan!

But, for the curious minds out there, let me throw some light on these books that I have been blabbering about.

Coloring is an example of an activity that fits the definition of the psychology concept of  “flow.” When someone is in flow, they are performing an activity that is enjoyable and engaging but not too stressful, such as yoga, knitting or exercising.

” With coloring books, it takes away the pressure of having to draw and to allow

being more immersed in the moment.”

Your coloring book is your coloring book. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of it. You don’t have to show it to anyone else if you don’t want to.

I haven’t become a hardcore colorer or anything. I’m sure my interest in this hobby will wax and wane with my whims, just as it does with knitting and nail-painting and cooking. But as someone who can’t sit and breathe deeply without getting itchy all over, it’s nice to have something other than meditation that still feels meditative.

So, what about you? Have you given adult coloring books a try? Would you?

Motherhood has been an amazing journey so far; each day, an adventure of sorts. After a stint in marketing and marketing communications, I am currently a stay at home mom, blogger, traveller and chef. Never thought I would be happy to call myself a SAHM! Right now,  my 24/7 job is being a mom. Also, I am an endangered bookworm who loves nothing more than finding the perfect solution to life’s little conundrums in books and nature.
