WHO (World Health Organization) defines health as ‘A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Not merely absence of disease and infirmity‘.
Urban fast paced goal-oriented life leaves behind very little scope to introspect our real needs and wants. High competition, aspirations coupled with inability to cope with its physical and time demands leaves a large lacuna between ‘have and wants’. End product is a lot of anger, frustration and unresolved conflicts.
If we pay heed to what happens inside the body in response to stress, we may see:
Hyperventilation, irregular breathing
Palpitation, irregular heart beats
How does this happen? what happens inside the body when the above symptoms are experienced?
These are produced due to fright and flight hormone from adrenal medulla, which is part of adrenal gland. It prepares us for the crisis (attack or defend). Constant stress leads to continued high levels of these catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine).
The endocrines function like an orchestra. So, what are Endocrines? Endocrines are the ductless glands present in the body. For example, the thyroid, pancreas and ovaries which secrete various hormones. So all other endocrines, be it the pituitary, thyroid, pancreas or ovaries readjust their secretions to match the adrenals.
As a result obesity, hypothyroidism, diabetes, hypertension, PCOD, sterility, premature greying of hair are the end products. Aptly, they are called ‘Lifestyle Disorders‘.
“Hence ‘ease’ in the mind, can avoid ‘dis-ease’ in the body”.
Meditation, Relaxation Techniques, Gardening, Music or cultivating a hobby can all help deal with negative emotions and in turn regulate heart beats and respiratory pattern.
Hence a balanced mind will be able to utilize this healthy vehicle (body) for higher purpose of existence.
