Yummy Dry Roasted Chivda/Indian Trail Mix!

dry roasted chivda

Poha has always been a yummy snack that was always made at my home. It’s one of those quick snacks that is generally had with tea. Mostly made on Diwali and other festivals, poha or chivda as we call it holds a nostalgic smell in my mind.

My mom made this the healthy way, which was roasting poha instead of deep frying. Hence, I will share the same oil free chivda recipe.

For making this, I am using the medium to thick variety of Poha available in the market.

Ingredients for Yummy Dry Roasted Chivda:

  • ½ kg poha
  • 2 tsp oil  for seasoning
  • 2-3 sprigs of curry leaves
  • 2-4 slit green chilli
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1 tsp mustard seed (rai)
  • 1tsp cashews
  • 1tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp peanuts
  • 2 tbsp roasted chana
  • 2 red dried pepper broken
  • 2 tbsp dried coconut
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • ½ tsp salt (or as needed)

  1. Roast the chivda in a deep pan for ten minutes, first do it for one minute take it out mix it well and put it back for another half minute. Make batches. Do not add too much at a time. Set aside. Note: This gives a nice crunch to the chivda and saves time. If it is roasted directly in frying pan it will need more oil and will have to stir fry for about ten to fifteen minutes.
  1. Heat the flat frying pan on medium heat, add the oil, oil should be moderately hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds as they start cracking lower the heat to low.
  2. Add curry leaves and green chillies, stir fry them for about a minute till the green chili and curry leaves stop splattering.
  3. Next add peanuts, cashews and red chillies roast them for two minute. do keep stirring
  4. Time to add roasted chana, and coconut.  Stir fry for another 30 seconds.
  5. Add Asafoetida, salt and turmeric. Stir for few seconds. Add chivda and  mix it well. Add sugar and keep stirring continuously for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Store this in an airtight container and this chivda stays fresh and crunchy for 2 to 3 weeks.
